Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I wanted to know if you knew anything about the teaching that being "Born again" is not the same as being "Born of God"? I can't see the difference personally. Do you know where this teaching originates?

Answer: As far as I can see, the two terminologies are being used to express two aspects of the same experience.

"Born again" simply means that the natural first birth is not adequate for entry into the Kingdom of God, and that a second "spiritual" birth is needed. (John 3:3,6)

"Born of God" expresses the thought that this new birth is of Divine nature, and makes a person a new creation as having been made partaker of the Divine nature, as distinct from the birth that can only make us human (John 1:12-13).

If somebody has come around with a new hair-splitting doctrine making them different experiences, I have not heard of such teaching around here.
