Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I have a question about David. I always hear that David was a man after God's own heart. I've read his history in the Old Testament and have read a lot of his Psalms. I cannot understand why he is so proud. In one of his Psalms he refers to himself as holy. I have always been taught that we are to be humble but bold in our beliefs. What I don't understand is why does David say these things? I understand that he did very little to upset God throughout his life but he was a mortal just like us. Are we supposed to be like David or are we supposed to humble?

Answer: Thank you for this good question.

First of all, let me tell you why David was a man after God's own heart. In Acts 13:22 God said, "I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will." In fact, start reading a few verses before verse 22 and you will see why that meant so much to God.

You seem to be convinced that David was bragging on himself. Why (if David was holy) should he deny the fact? He did deny it when he was convinced that he had sinned against God. See Psalm chapter 51.

But also notice Psalm 34:1-6. David was boasting in the Lord, not of himself. False humility is just as wrong as pride because false humility is pride.

Think about it.
