Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: In reading the book of Jonah, I used to pretty much assign the story to the realm of morality play, given the idea of a man being swallowed by a fish, etc. Yet when I was on a tour to Israel, our guide pointed out a location which he claimed was Jonah's burial place.

Do you think the Israelis designated a spot just to humor the tourists, or do they really have some evidence that there was such a man and that is where he is buried? I would love to think the story is literally true, but wonder if that is reasonable? Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Answer: When a man catches a fish that is never questioned, but when a fish catches a man it is big news.

The story of Jonah is very authentic. Jesus quoted the fact of the story, "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly , so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" Matthew 12: 40).

The reason the devil attacks the book and story of Jonah is because it is a picture of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For in order to be saved, one must believe in a miracle. If thou shalt confess with thy mouth and believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved (Romans 10: 9-10).

Yes, the story of Jonah is very real, and our salvation rests upon the truth of this book.
