Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I have been asked recently, how can God be a God that lets us choose to be born again or not be born again, be justified sending us to hell if we reject him. Because He knows even before we are born what our choice will be. And since we did not get to choose to be born the natural birth, how can God allow us to be born just to go to hell?

Answer: The consequence of sin is Hell, a place where a person chooses for himself. Now, the Scriptures say that God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hell is the place that God sent His Son to keep people away from. Hell is the place a person who rejects God's offer of salvation must go. A person who wants to remain in his sinful state would actually be in torment if he should go to heaven, in the presence of a holy God and holy angels. In Hell, a place a person goes by his own choice, he has chosen forever to be away from God (that is his, and not God's choice).

Secondly, sin must have penalties. Even on earth, if we break the law, there are fines and imprisonments awaiting us. God is the moral ruler of the universe, and He, by virtue of his government over the universe, must by necessity punish sin.

Now God did not allow us to be born just to go to Hell. He gave His Son to take the penalty we deserved, so that we would not have to go there. God's intention is to bless, and not to bring judgment on us. God is love, and God is also righteous. What kind of a place would heaven be if people were allowed to dwell there in rebellion to God's righteous precepts? It would not be heaven at all. Heaven is a place where righteousness reigns. Hell is a place for those who do not want righteousness, but want to go their own way. It is necessary that there are two places to go after death, because the righteous would be out of place in an environment of sin; and also, those who choose not to obey God, would feel extremely out of place in heaven. I believe heaven would be more a place of torment for them that Hell would be.

Let me ask you personally, have you already chosen to rebel against your Creator, and in order to justify your decision, put the blame on God for what you have chosen to do? God has given you the choice, and you are the one who makes it. That God knew what choice you will make has nothing to do with it. You, and you alone, are the one who makes the choice either to choose life or death. Since that is the case, in the final analysis you are the one who will held responsible for the consequences of your choice.
