Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: One thing that has caused me much trouble over the last 2 to 3 years is a mistake I made as a young Christian. One morning while I was seeking to do spiritual warfare through prayer, I got my words mixed up and instead of rebuking the devil ended up rebuking the holy spirit. It was a complete accident and I immediately confessed this sin to God and asked for forgiveness. Of course, I soon read about the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and was completely beside myself. I then read a commentary by William Barclay which stated that 'the person who thinks he has committed the unforgivable sin, cannot have done so'. Even so, I am still troubled by this, but it has only been over the past 3 years. Am I just allowing myself to be tormented, or have I really done something from which I cannot be forgiven? I would appreciate your advice and counsel on this. One way or another I need to know where I stand.

Answer: William Barclay is right. Since you are deeply disturbed by the fear that you have committed the unpardonable sin, it only proves that you have not done so. Someone who is guilty of this sin would have such hardness of heart that he would have no bad feelings about it.

You are being tormented by the devil over this. The devil is a liar, and the father of lies.

One way that I personally found to be a great help, when I was a young Christian, was to seek God for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. 1Corinthians 14:4 says that by speaking in an unknown tongue, I edify myself. Praying in the Spirit in this manner gives victory over tormenting spirits, and gives inner peace. Let me give you some Scripture references to read carefully and prayerfully. Shut yourself in with God, and pray over these verses: Acts 2:4, Acts 10:44-46, Acts 19:6, and 1 Corinthians 14:4. You will find that praying in the language that the Spirit gives you, will break the tormenting power of the spirit that is attacking you in your mind.

If your pastor has not had this experience of speaking in tongues for self- edification, then you should seek out a Pentecostal or Charismatic person who can help you with this. I can assure you from personal experience that praying in tongues breaks satanic torments over your minds. My wife and I just agreed together in prayer for you, that your mind will no longer be tormented over this matter.
