Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I have a question I've wondered about a lot, concerning burial. Because of cost of them, I've thought of cremation. Does the Bible mention it? I wouldn't want to do it if God is not keen on it. Do you think it matters how we're put in the ground? I really would like the mind of Christ on this matter. Could you help?

Answer: I know of no specific instructions in the Bible concerning cremation. Yet, the practice in Jewish and Christian circles has been burial. Cremation is more frequently practiced in the heathen religions. Jesus was buried before rising again, and sets a pattern for us all (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Look at John 5:28-29, where Jesus spoke of people coming out of the graves.

The bodies were to return to the dust from which they were made, as we see in Genesis 3:19. My own feeling is that burial is more consistent with the Christian way than cremation, and that is the way I would want my body to be handled in the event of my death.
