Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: When someone dies do they remember the people they left on earth? Example does a child remember its parents?

Answer: Thank you for a very thought provoking question regarding, "Will we know each other in Heaven?"

Eternal life is the greatest promise of the Father, and the fact of spending eternity in heaven is even more glorious. First off, let me share with you my belief that Heaven is going to be Heaven anyway, just because Jesus is there. Christians long for the day when we shall see Him, face to face. He has redeemed us! He has loved us! Anything else about Heaven, (streets of gold, gates of pearl, the crystal river, tree of life), and everything else that goes with it are just more icing on the cake. Seeing our loved ones will, I believe, be secondary. We know that in that place called heaven, there will be no disappointment, sorrow, tears or strife. I get nearly as excited about what won't be there as I do about what is there.

Now to answer your question. The Scriptures indicate a knowledge of those we know in the afterlife. Recall the incident of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man, you recall, was in a place of torment. He looked and across the gulf and saw Lazarus being comforted in Abraham's bosom. Obviously, he recognized both Lazarus and Abraham. (See Luke 16)

I Corinthians 13:12 would cause us to believe that in that land of perfectness, "we shall know even as also we are known." I believe this means just that. In heaven we will know and be known.

The fact that we are assured of knowing Jesus in Heaven would also lend to the fact that we will know and recognize each other. We do understand from the scriptures, that in Heaven, there will be no male or female. We shall all be as one.

Again, the fact that the redeemed of all the ages will one day stand before the presence of our Lord, and see Him in His splendor, will make Heaven Heaven.

I trust these words might help you. God bless you as you grow in HIS grace.
