~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Is Heaven really in the sky somewhere?

Answer: We should first define two key terms. The dictionary defines sky as a region of the clouds, or the upper air, the heavens or firmament, the supernatural or celestial heaven.

The second is Heaven. It can have at least three meanings - some which overlap with "sky". The word "Heavens" in Scripture can refer to the sky, air or heaven. It is a dual word implying two of something.

The Bible calls the atmosphere where clouds are and where rain falls from and where birds fly as heaven.

The Bible calls stellar space where the heavenly bodies are (sun, moon, planets, stars etc) also heaven.

The Bible calls the abode of God heaven. This seems to be what you are referring to. In a sense, the abode of God is beyond the sky. 1 Kings 8:27 indicates that God is bigger than the sky. The abode of God is spoken as above. Jesus came down from heaven and then later returned up to heaven. Paul referred to a third heaven in 2 Corinthians 12:2.

The abode of God is in the heavens - even beyond the heavens. The importance is not it's location but it's Inhabitor - God, and our being ready to go to be with Him.

For further study, look up heaven in a Bible dictionary. Use a Bible concordance to look up all the verses containing heaven. Look at the context and see if they are referring to the atmosphere, the universe or the abode of God.
