~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: If a backslider dies in that state will he still go to Heaven?

Answer: Although the word backsliding or backslider is only found in the Scriptures a few times, it is implied in several different places.

First of all we need to define exactly what the word means. It means turning away, rebellious, apostasy. Many people give several reasons for backsliding, and perhaps there are. However, I believe the bottom line is this: We are more or less backslidden when we turn from or renounce our faith. And if that is the case we will not go to Heaven.

The Bible says that we are saved by "faith" (Ephesians 2: 7; 1 Peter 1:9). Therefore, if we renounce the thing that saved us, then I would presume we are no longer saved (Hebrews 6: 4-8; Hebrews 10: 26-29,38,39; 2 Peter 2:20-22).

I will give you a few Scriptures where backsliding is mentioned or referred to. Jeremiah 3:12, 14, 22; Jeremiah 8:5; Jeremiah 31: 22; Jeremiah 49:4; Mark 14: 72; Luke 9:62; John 15: 6; 1 Corinthians 5: 1-5; 1 Corinthians 10:1-10, Galatians 1: 6,7; Galatians 4:9, 1 Timothy 5: 15; 1 Timothy 6:10,20,21; 2 Timothy 2:12; Hebrews 3:12-19.

Yes, a person can sin and that starts the process of backsliding if they don't repent. But, the end result will be a denial of the faith. Thus, causing the person to miss Heaven. I hope this helps in your quest for truth. Lord bless.
