Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Where do I direct my eyes to when I praise God?

Answer: In response to your query...

Your question was a very valid one, and one I feel deserves a serious answer. The worship part of a service should not be one in which we feel awkward in any way. It should be a time where we open our spirit up to divine, intimate communion with our God. We should feel a very special closeness to Him as we shut ourselves in with Him during this part of the service.

Being a Pastor I can sense that there are those among my congregation who feel the same way you do. They aren't sure just what to do. Being that I am leading the service I often look at the people, and it is rather humorous to catch eye contact with different ones who are singing a praise to the Lord, and yet are looking at me. :-)

Let me offer a couple suggestions... First, remember to Whom you are singing. If you will focus on the Lord and shut everything and everyone else out you are accomplishing much more than those who are merely singing from memory or out of routine. When you can focus on the Lord you will not be cognizant of those around you, or even where you might be looking as you sing. For example, you might be casually looking toward the front or maybe staring at the ceiling, but if you are shut in with God it won't matter.

Secondly, purpose within yourself that you will not allow things to distract you from giving your all during the singing and worship part of the service. If there is a lot going on during the singing that can catch your eye, I would suggest simply closing your eyes as you sing.
