Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Recently I turned my life over to Christ and am new in my walk. I have three children ages 13, 10 and 2. I am a single parent. As you know, the work is pretty wooly right now.

My boys are into the WWF wrestling and up til now, I didn't see the harm, but last week I caught a bit of it, where they are starting to use women in various forms of undress and disrespect, and I turned it off. They also like Rap music. I don't want to totally make them stop everything at once.

Their T-shirts have wrestling guys on them and some of the CD's I've ordered are rap, and I hate to just not give them until I listen to them.

Please pray for us for guidance and although they are young, their salvation. I hate that I've waited so long to begin my walk with the Lord, but better late than never, right?

Answer: I am so glad to hear of your new relationship with Christ. You have entered into the best relationship anyone could ever experience, that being a personal relationship with God. The greatest thing about that is that He has put your past behind, and you have started a whole new life with him.

2 Corinthians 5:17 states, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

Ps 103:12 tells us that "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us."

Because of this change that Christ has made in your life, you are going to see things differently than you used to; such as the harm that you sense in WWF that your boys are involved with, worldly music such as Rap, and other things.

Your reaction to these things is because of the Spirit of God Who now abides within you. Your boys will not quite understand all of this, because they have not received the change that you have. At their ages of 13 and 10, they are certainly old enough to understand spiritual things and experience salvation.

I feel that it would be best to sit down with them, and explain the change that has taken place in your life. Explain why you see the harm in WWF and the music, giving reason to your answers rather than "just because". Most importantly, show them the plan of salvation, and express your desire for them to have the same experience that you had.

They may not accept it right at first, but be consistent in your lifestyle and love for the Lord. Your boys will watch you, and will see the change in your attitude and disposition. It will be this daily consistency that will win them to the Lord quicker than anything.

Taking them to church with you on a regular basis will expose them to the Gospel and the things of God. Once they see their need of salvation, and respond by accepting Christ as their Savior, they will understand why these things are wrong, and will begin to put them aside on their own because of the work of Christ in their heart.

I will be praying for you in this new walk and experience with Christ. I believe that God will give you the wisdom that you need in raising your children. May God richly bless you as you seek His perfect will.
