Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: If a man's wife becomes mentally ill, can he marry another woman under the Christian teaching?

Answer:

Thank you for your question. I will try to answer you the best I know how according to the Holy Bible.

In Matthew, Chapter 19, verses 3 thru 9, the only reason Christ gave for allowing divorce would be in the case of continued infidelity. Marriage is a vow and an agreement that is taken before God. In our culture, our wedding vows state, "in sickness and in health." We promise to be faithful whether our spouse is healthy or sick. Marriage is also used as a symbol of Christ and his relationship to His church (Ephesians 5:21-33).

I realize that every situation is different and I do sympathize with you and your situation. However, I think it best to stay true to your sick wife. Who knows? God could heal her! I will be praying for both of you.
