Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I was wondering what one has to do to become a Christian pastor? i.e. what kind of studies, where do I start, how many years (I know that it's for life), all of that and everything else I need to know. I beg you to please give me as many answers as possible, I know that it may take you some time to answer this question. But please do find the time. I'm 25 now and I want to know if it's too late to start this mission that I feel I must take on.

Answer: First of all it is never to late to work for God, I once knew of a man who started to preach the gospel, when he was in his late fifties, and went on to have a fruitful and productive ministry. The first thing that is essential is the CALL of God. You must make sure that God is leading you into the ministry, for you will easily quit or run when the battle gets hot, if not. That can be determined by seeking God for confirmation of his call, and the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

Then you must Study to show yourself approved unto God a workman the needeth not to be ashamed, I often tell young preachers, You will either study or stutter, For there are two types of preachers, those who say something and those who have something to say.

Studying involves much discipline. That is why many choose to attend a Bible college which is most helpful, but not always totally necessary. Continue to seek the Lord and find your place in his harvest.
