Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: What does the Bible say about a woman's attire, head covering, make up, and earings? My husband and I have different views on this matter and I'd like to know what to do? One minister told me that I'm in rebellion and not submissive to my husband and the word. I want to know the truth.

Answer: It is good that you are wanting to know the truth, for without that attitude you can't be saved (John 8:32-38).

The truth is, the Bible does have much to say about the things you mentioned above. I assume that you are questioning whether or not holiness standards are for the Christian today. That issue is not even debatable; they definitely are for the saint of God. So many associate 'standards' as legalism. No, legalism is the striving to be saved by good works or one's own righteousness. Holiness standards are rather expectations from God for His Children. "Be ye holy as I am Holy" (1 Peter 1:14-16). It is obedience, not bondage of legalism! Paul commands the Christian to be "separate" (2 Cor 6:17-19). We as Christians should live a godly life. That entails every aspect of life - how we behave, how we talk, how we dress, and the places that we go, etc. At all times we should seek to bring glory to God. Immodesty in dress and appearance is unbecoming to a Christian.

You must understand, that for me to deal with every item you have asked about would require lengthy answers. So I am suggesting that you read some of the following passages of scripture and let the Lord speak to you: 1 Corinthians 11:1-16; 1 Peter 3:1-5; 1 Timothy 2:9; Deuteronomy 22:5.

Just a word about submission. Don't take the Biblical command for you to be submissive to your husband as a threat, but rather as a means of protection. He, of course, needs to "love you as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it" as well. You cannot change him, but you can change yourself, by allowing the Holy Ghost to mold you by the Word (John 15:3). God will bless a sincere heart.

May God bless you in your search for the truth.
