~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: How does God view suicide? Is it an unforgivable sin, like blasphemy of the Holy Spirit or is it a forgivable sin? I've looked in Bible dictionary and I cannot find anything. Please let me know which scriptures to look at. Thank you.

Answer:

It is good that you are seeking a Biblical solution to your questions. There are many people who take a humanistic view and say, It is my life and I have a right to do with it what I will.

Suicide is not blasphemy of the Holy Ghost or the unpardonable sin that the Bible speaks about. These fall under a different subject which would be very lengthy to address.

In answering this question, we must be speaking about a person who professes to be a child of God, someone whose sins have been washed in the blood of Jesus, who has a personal relationship with Him. An unsaved person would be lost for all eternity in Hell. Suicide does not make them any more lost.

We must realize that death is not the end (Hebrews 9:27). We will all face judgment for the deeds done in the body. Man was created by God a living soul, and he will spend eternity in either heaven or hell.

When a person becomes a child of God, they are no longer their own person. They have been bought with a price and should glorify God in their spirit, soul, and body (1 Corinthians 3:17; 6:19, 20; 1 Thessalonians 5:23). This body I have is God's property. If I took a hammer and went out to beat it on your car, you would be upset with me. You would try to stop me because it is your car. My body, as a child of God, is no longer my own to do with as I please. This is the temple of the Holy Ghost.

If I kill myself, it is still murder and the scripture is clear that no murderer has eternal life (1 John 3:15). Murderers have their part in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8; 22:15). I understand that if I murdered someone else, I may someday repent and be saved. If I kill myself though, it is very unlikely that I will have time or desire to repent. That is not a chance a child of God would want to take.

We trust that this has helped you some. If you desire more information, David Wilkerson wrote a book entitled, "Suicide" which not only deals with suicide in the sense of what is wrong with it, but also with the causes.
