Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: In 1 Corinthians11:18-22 -- When they are talking about, "What? have you not houses to eat and to drink in? Is this eating real food in the church house, or what? This church I know says it means spiritual food, and that you are to do that (read your Bible at home). This church is also (some of the big shots in this church) are also saying that a church wasn't meant to have a pastor, just elders, and that God will send messengers to preach if it was His will. To me, when God talked about the body, the body without the head --pastor -- would die, because we as a body of believers are suppose to all fellowship together, and each has their part to do. I was always told and believed that the pastor is the head of the church, Jesus above the pastor of course. I know that this may sound mixed up, but this little church is just about shut down. It was a Freewill Baptist, then some got filled with the Holy Spirit, and the church split. Now what little bit of people is left are having problems with this no pastor stuff. I know God said come bodly to the throne of God through Jesus, but how about new Christians that are still on the milk of the word? I was a newborn Christian and I needed the pastor and teachers, more at that time. Do you know what I mean? Any way if you can give me some Bible verses, I would really be thankful.

Answer: I believe you have a right to be concerned.

Actually, in the verses you used for a reference, The Apostle Paul was talking about social meals as well as the Lord's Supper. It seems the people would bring their own food from home. The rich would have a real feast, while the poor would not have much at all. The wealthy were forming their own class distinction.

I believe it is good to partake of the Lord's Supper at our own local church.

That your leaders would not want you to read your Bibles at home, and in the church seems strange indeed. The Pastor should be the shepherd, or under shepherd (under Jesus) in each local church.

Deacons were first chosen in the early church in Acts 6:1-4, not to run the church, but to feed the needy. Preaching elders in the church are Biblical if they are appointed in a Biblical manner. But every church needs a pastor.
