Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I am writing to you, grieved in my heart. Our church is in Zimbabwe, Africa, and was born out of the "charismatic movement." However, about 7 or 8 years ago, our pastor was in Maurtius, and when he came back, we discovered a real change in him. He was humbled. Subsequent to that, we learned that he had met a minister in Mauritius whom he claims has an apostolic ministry. To quote their language, the apostolic ministry lays the foundation and the pastors build on it, and that foundation is Jesus Christ.

Somehow, I find that almost half the church runs to Mauritius at the drop of a hat, and our elders have to go at least three or four times a year. I hear the name of this "Apostle" mentioned more than that of Jesus Christ. Anyway I digress.

What is an Apostolic ministry, and what is its place in the church of today?

Answer: This question is difficult to answer because of the conditions unknown to me.

I understand your concern, and your grief.

Anyone of us would be disappointed to watch our church go the wrong way, and it always seems suspicious to see a body of believers running after a man.

It always causes me to wonder why large numbers of people in a church feel the need to go elsewhere for the blessings and truth of God's Word, unless their own local church is stagnate.

There is also the danger that the one claiming to be an apostle is just an opportunist with a very dynamic personality.

In any account, it seems the local church, the pastor included, can get what they want and need from God by fasting, prayer, and the diligent study of the Word of God.

An Apostolic ministry is simply having the same ministry the New Testament Church had, with the preaching of the Word of God with signs following. See Mark 16:15-18; 1 Corinthians, chapters 12, 13, and 14.

Each of our churches should be a New Testament Church with an Apostolic ministry.

At the same time, we must be careful to avoid following someone, anyone, just because of miracles.

We must expect those attempting to lead to also have a Godly lifestyle. Even the antichrist will work miracles when he appears, and many misguided people will follow him because of the miracles. Please understand I am not condemning this man who claims to be an apostle, as I do not know him.

I suggest you also read Matthew 7:13-27 and 2nd Thessalonians 2:1-12.

Keep yourself in an attitude of prayer, and in the Word of God.
