About God and the Bible

(Parts I, II, III)
By J. George Cover

Lesson 1 - What About God? (Cont'd.) (Text Version)

  • "For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same, my name shall be GREAT among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be GREAT among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts" (Malachi 1:11).
  • Take a look at Mt. Sinai, where God gave the Ten Commandments and many other things to Moses after Moses had spent 40 days there in His presence. Witness the "thunders and lightnings, the thick cloud upon the mount, the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud. the mountain was together on a smoke and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly, and when the voice of the trumped sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice" (Exodus 19:14-25).
  • Read Job, chapters 38-41; listen to God speak as He reasons with Job; you will know that He truly is GREAT.

10. God Is Awesome And Wonderful.

"His name shall be called Wonderful, counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). Go to Isaiah 6 and read Isaiah's experience and feelings in the presence of God when he "saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple." Turn to Revelation 1 and read how John saw the Lord. He said, "And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last."

11. God Is Compassionate.

  • "Like as a father pities his children, so the Lord pities them that fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust...The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them" (Psalm 103:13-18).
  • "And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with COMPASSION toward them, and he healed their sick" (Matthew 14:14).
  • "Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way" (Matthew 15:32).
  • "And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with COMPASSION toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things" (Mark 6:34). Many other times we read about Jesus that he was moved with COMPASSION.

12. God Is Just.

His laws are just. He is the judge of all mankind. We are all accountable to Him. He has appointed a "Judgment Day" (Acts 17:3 1; Romans 14:10-12; Revelation 20).

13. God Is All-Wise
14. God Is All-Knowing (Omniscient).
15. God Is All-Powerful (Omnipotent).
16. God Is Everywhere Present (Omnipresent).

However, He manifests or reveals Himself to people, in various ways at various times.

17. God Is Holy And Pure.

He commands us to be so.

18. God Is Merciful And Forgiving.

19. God Is Generous.

"Please tell me more."
