BIBLE BASICS For Smart People Who Do Not Want To Be Dummies About God and the Bible Lesson 3 - What About Jesus? Scripture References: 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1; Philippians 2:6-11; John 3:16; John 1:1-4; Matthew 1:21; Luke 19:10. 1. Who Is Jesus? 1.He is the Son of God (John 3:16). 2.He is the son of man. He is the son of Mary, but not the physical son of her husband, Joseph (Luke 19:10). 3.He is God who came to earth in the flesh to redeem us from sin (1 Timothy 3:16). 4.He is the Creator of every thing, and therefore existed in eternity and in heaven before he took upon himself a human body. 5.When He was born into this world, he was Jewish. He was born in Bethlehem, Judaea, in Israel almost 2000 years ago. He was taken to Egypt as a baby so that Herod the king would not kill him. When Herod died, an angel told Joseph to return to their own country. They settled in Nazareth of the Province of Galilee and grew up there. 6.He was tempted just like every one else but never committed even one sin. 7.His step-father, Joseph, was a Jewish carpenter and no doubt Jesus also learned and worked the ,carpentry trade. 8.He was baptized in the River Jordan by John the Baptist and then began his ministry. His age at that time was about 30 years. His ministry continued for about 3 1/2 years. 9.He called 12 men to follow Him. He called them his apostles (sent ones) and sent them to preach to and heal people, cast evil spirits out of people, and to even raise people from the dead, with power that he gave them. Besides teaching and performing many miracles, Jesus did all those things and more that he sent out the apostles to do. These apostles would continue the ministry that Jesus began, after he left them to return to God, His Father in Heaven. 10.Jesus did and taught many wonderful things which are recorded in the New Testament part of the Holy Bible. 11.He lived in Israel at the time that the Roman Emperor was the highest earthly ruler in that land as well as the world in Europe, Affica, Asia, and the Middle East. Other kings and governors also ruled the land under the authority of the emperor. The religious Jewish leaders were allowed a certain amount of power over their own people. 12.In spite of the many wonderful things that Jesus did for the people, the religious leaders were jealous of him, condemned him falsely, accused him falsely to the Roman governor, who had him tortured, nailed to a wooden cross and killed. He could have even called thousands of angels to rescue him but chose to die to pay for all of our evil deeds and sins so we could be saved and have everlasting life. 13.Jesus died on the cross, in fulfillment of many, many, Old Testament prophecies, written hundreds of years before his birth. 14.He became alive and came out of the grave, which was a cave hewn out of a huge rock in the side of a hill. This was after being dead three days. 15.He showed himself alive many times and was on earth 40 days after he arose from the dead. 16.After 40 days He led the apostles out to the top of the Mount of Olives, which is east of and within sight of Jerusalem. While they were watching, He arose up into the clouds and went back to Heaven. While they watched Him go up into the clouds, two angels dressed in white stood with them and said, "Why are you looking up into Heaven? This same Jesus which is taken from you into heaven will come back to earth in the clouds just like you have seen him go." "Please tell me more."
