Lesson 20 - What About the Commandments? (Text Version)

There are many wonderful benefits in keeping God's commandments:

  1. We avoid the curses and get the blessings.
  2. "A good understanding have all they that do his commandments" (Psalm 111:10).
  3. "Then shall I not be ashamed when I have respect unto all thy commandments" (Psalm 119:6).
  4. "Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine" (Psalm 119:98).
  5. "I have more understanding than all My teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation" (Psalm 119:99).
  6. "I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.
  7. "I have refrained My feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word" (Psalm 119:101).
  8. "Great peace have they which love thy law; and nothing shall offend them" (Psalm 119:165).

Jesus said:

"Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:19).
"If ye keep my commandments ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love" (John 14:10).
"Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you" (John 15:14).
"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city" (Revelation 22:14).

We need to search the Scriptures diligently so that we might know how God has told us to live.

The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20)

  1. "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (vs. 3).
  2. "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image...thou shalt not bow down thyself to them" (vs. 3, 5).
  3. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain" (vs. 7).
  4. "Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy" (vs. 8).
  5. "Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee" (vs. 12).
  6. "Thou shalt not kill" (vs. 13).
  7. "Thou shalt not commit adultery" (vs. 14).
  8. "Thou shalt not steal" (vs. 15).
  9. "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" (vs. 16).
  10. "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's."

The Two Greatest Commandments

  1. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment" (Matthew 22:37-38).
  2. "And the second is like unto it, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself" (vs. 39). "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets" (Matthew 22:40).

The New Commandment (John 13:34)

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another."

"Please tell me more."
