BIBLE BASICS For Smart People Who Do Not Want To Be Dummies About God and the Bible Lesson 29 - The Crucifixion of Jesus. Death by crucifixion was one of the most cruel and shameful deaths that could be devised, It is supposed to have been invented by Semiramis, queen of Nimrod, who founded the Babylonian system of mysteries. It was a Roman practice inflicted only upon slaves and the worst criminals. The person was nailed to the cross, each hand extended to the utmost stretch. The feet were nailed together, and then the cross was lifted and dropped into the hole with a violent thud which disjointed the whole body. The weight of the body hung on nails through the hands and feet. A victim was left on the cross until he died of pain and untold sufferings [Dr. Finis Dake]. Why crucifixion? 1.He was made a curse for us that we might be freed from the curse. "Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree" (Galatians 3:13; Deuteronomy 21:23). 2.It was the Roman means of capital punishment. Rome had this authority; that is why the Jews brought Jesus to Pilate. The Jewish method was by stoning. Prophecies fulfilled when Jesus was crucified. 1.Jesus told his disciples a number of times that he would die and rise again the third day. "Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the son of man is betrayed to be crucified?" (Matthew 26:2). 2."For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial" (Matthew 26:12). 3.Jesus betrayed for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12-13). 4.That they would be "cast to the potter in the House of the Lord" (Zechariah 11:13). Judas returned the 30 pieces to the chief priests, who bought the potters field to bury strangers in (Matthew 27:3-10). (Note: in Matthew 27, it gives Jeremy as the prophet who prophesied this. It was, however, Zechariah. The name, Jeremy, might have been added by a copiest.) 5.Matthew 27:14 says, "He answered him to never a word, insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly." "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth" (Isaiah 53:7). 6."All my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels" (Psalm 22:14). "I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me" (Psalm 22:17). 7.'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1; Matthew 27:46). 8."All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him" (Psalm 22:7-8). "They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion" (Psalm 22:13). 9."For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet" (Psalm 22:16). 10."They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture" (Psalm 22:18). 11."And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel" (Genesis 3:15). 12.Isaiah 53:3-10. 13."They gave me also gall for meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink" (Psalm 69:21; Matthew 27:34). 14."And he was numbered with the transgressors" (Mark 15:28; Isaiah 53:12). 15."And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death" (Isa. 53:9; Matthew 27:57).
