What Are the Consequences of Breaking God's
Commandments?

B. Cain and his line of descendants. (Cont'd.)

 1."And now thou art cursed from the earth, which hath opened
   her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; 
 2."When thou tillest the ground, if shall not henceforth yield
   unto thee her strength. 
 3."A fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 
 4."From thy face shall I be hid.

	"And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is
	greater than I can bear. Behold, thou hast driven me
	out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy
	face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a
	vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that
	every One that findeth me shall slay me" (Genesis
	4:11-14). 

 5.Cain's line eventually all perished in the great flood in Noah's
   day. 

Although Adam and Eve sinned, we see God's mercy and love in
many ways. Although Cain killed his brother, we also see God's
mercy in so many ways. Can you name God's acts of mercy in
these two cases?

In considering the consequences of sin in these two first instances,
we have a picture of the consequences of sin in general. 

Consider:

 1."Sin is not hurtful because it is forbidden; But it is forbidden
   because it is hurtful" (Benjamin Franklin). 
 2.The sin that robs God of your soul will rob your soul of God. 
 3."The wages of sin is death -- thank God I quit before pay day"
   (Reamer Loomis). 
 4.Sin, a moment of gratification; an eternity of remorse. 
 5."The best way to show that a stick is crooked is not to argue
   about it or to spend time denouncing it, but to lay a straight
   stick alongside it" (D. L. Moody). 
 6.Sin is the greatest of all detectives; be sure it will find you
   out. 
 7.Whether a man is an up-and-out or down-and-out sinner it is
   only when he recognizes that he is "out" that he is able to get
   "in." 
 8.The trouble with a little sin is that it won't stay little. 
 9.Sin is a clenched fist, and its object is the face of God. 
10.Sin is a man's declaration of independence of God. 
11.A preacher announced there were 726 sins. He is now being
   besieged by requests for the list by people who think they are
   missing something. 
12.The Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the
   Bible.
