Chapter 8 - The Training

Angela walked over to Amanda, and putting her hand on Amanda, she began to pray and then to prophesy of both dangers and victories to come. After a good hour of communing with God, Angela was ready to start teaching Amanda the skill of fighting with a staff. Amanda was anxious to learn, so it didn’t take long for the girls to get down to some real serious jousting. Time flew fast and the girls soon lost track of time.

For the rest of the day the two girls practiced attacking and defending with the staff. Amanda lost count of the times she ended up on her behind, or how many times she received a soft tap on the head or neck that in a real battle would have been a deadly blow to her. Several times she would look over at Judah after having her feet swept out from under her. He would be lying on his stomach with his front paws over his eyes.

It did not go all bad for Amanda, for by late afternoon she was getting the hang of it. She was not only defending against several rapid blows in succession, but was also gaining the courage to go on the offensive. Each time though that she would try to sweep Angela’s feet out from under her with her staff, Angela would jam hers into the ground upright and stop Amanda’s maneuver. Amanda didn’t stop though. She was determined to knock Angela down at least once before they were done.

Finally, before they took a break for supper, Amanda, having been knocked to the ground, feigned to have twisted her ankle. Angela offered for them to stop for a while, but Amanda insisted on continuing, although she acted like she was having trouble standing. This play worked, for it caused Angela to ease up on her aggressiveness.

Delivering a halfhearted overhead swing, Angela was now totally unprepared for Amanda’s new move. Stepping forward, she easily blocked Angela’s swing, then swinging her ‘injured’ foot, not her staff, she swept Angela’s feet out from under her. As soon as Angela hit the ground, Amanda brought her staff down in her own overhead swing, but Angela, recovering quickly, blocked the blow with her staff. Now the two of them, Angela, on her back and Amanda, over her, and pressing down hard, became locked in a test of wills. Amanda wanted to win this time so badly, she was beginning to shake. Slowly, Amanda started to overpower Angela and her staff inched closer and closer to Angela’s body.

“\"Do you give up?" Amanda strained out. Angela gave her a smile and through clenched teeth said, "I have one move left."

"It won’t do you any good. Admit it. I won." She had no sooner gotten the words out of her mouth when Judah’s huge paw wrapped around her mid section and with no effort at all, he lifted Amanda off and rolled her to the ground, then he pounced. Straddling Amanda with all fours, he lowered his head to her face and let out a low growl.

Angela burst out laughing, "What do you think of my move? Who do you think ought to give up now?"

Amanda reached up with both hands and grabbed Judah’s mane. Glancing over at Angela, she boasted aloud, "Not me! Give up? Never!" She tugged at Judah’s mane, but it was as if it was anchored to a mountain. Then looking Judah in the eyes, she warned him with a smile, "All right you hairy beast, I have one move left, too. If you don’t surrender, I’ll kiss your whole hairy face!"

Then Amanda pulled herself up and kissed Judah right on the nose.

Judah immediately rolled off of Amanda, tucked his tail, and then covered his head with his paws. He had been beaten.

Angela doubled up with laughter. "He surrendered! Judah has finally been beaten!"

Tears began to roll down the cheeks of the two girls as they both laughed hysterically. Amanda had never laughed so hard in her life. She got up and sat on top of Judah. Raising her hands in triumph, she declared herself "the winner."

At this point Judah stood up and began prancing around with Amanda riding upon his back. It was easy for him since, after all, he was as big as a horse. Then Judah began to buck mildly like an untamed bronco, causing Amanda to grab ahold of his mane to keep from falling off.

"I’ll never let go and you can’t make me!" Amanda yelled.

Judah now quit the bucking and broke into a gallop. Amanda was shrieking with delight. Judah took off across the clearing, leaped over the campfire, and bolted for the creek. Approaching the rock Amanda had dove off of earlier, he mounted it with one huge jump, then with one mighty leap off the top, both lion and rider went airborne. As quick as they went up, they came down. With a giant splash, the two landed in the middle of the stream and disappeared under the surface.

A few moments later, Judah’s head broke the surface and what a sight he was! Then, right next to him, Amanda popped up. Both of them had trouble seeing; Judah, with his mane all wetted down across his eyes, and Amanda with her long hair completely covering her face. Angela laughed and accused them of being twins.

"Hey, Amanda!" Angela taunted. "I thought you said you were never going to let go?*

"I didn’t!" Amanda retorted, then held up two handfuls of the hair from Judah’s mane.

Angela roared with laughter.

"Hey, Angela, I must be great. I defeated Judah and scalped him in one day," Amanda joked.

Judah reached over just then, put his paw on top of Amanda’s head, and pushed her under the water. Then the two of them had a race to the shore.

After drying off, Angela had Amanda sit on a log and eat some stew she had prepared for her.

"Amanda, while you eat, I want to teach you how to fight a lion with your staff." This idea of fighting a lion didn’t appeal to Amanda, but she was still eager to learn all she could.

First, Angela had Judah pose in different positions while she would point out where a lion’s vital organs would be and the best way to attack a lion. She pointed out every weakness a lion had, and how to take advantage of it. Then she showed Amanda how to defend against a charging lion. There were a couple of ways.

One was to leap aside at the last second, but timing was crucial. Then, as the lion’s momentum carried him past, she could either puncture his heart or lungs by using the staff like a spear. Or she could deliver a blow to the base of the skull, which would paralyze the lion. This was the preferred move.

The second move, she explained, was tricky also. It was used if the lion leaped at you. The object was to squat down, place the point of the staff in the ground in front of you, and use the staff as a pivot to pole-vault the lion over your head and away from you. "This move," Angela instructed, "was intended to be used when one was unable to leap to the side because of timing, or if an obstacle hindered you. The down side to this was that the lion was not immobilized. Sometimes the lion would be shaken up on the landing and run away, but sometimes, depending on its determination, the lion would immediately turn and reattack from behind."

Amanda nodded that she understood.

"Now you try the moves," Angela insisted.

For the rest of the evening, Angela continued to show Amanda several more moves with the staff, until the daylight began to fade away. As darkness settled in around the two girls and Judah, they congregated around the dwindling campfire and ate a quick snack of bread and fruit. While they sat there eating, Amanda reached over and picked up Angela's staff. This was Amanda’s first chance to examine the symbols on Angela’s staff. She recognized several right away. There was the fish symbol, the star of David, the dove, and of course, the cross and the Bible; but there were many that were new to Amanda.

"Angela, what do these other symbols stand for?" Amanda asked.

"They stand for battles that I have fought against the Devil. They are like the medals your earthly militaries give to their soldiers of valor. My battles begin with the initial rebellion in Heaven and lead up to more recent events." Then Angela pointed to a blank spot on her staff. "Here the Lord will engrave a lion symbolizing our victory over El Diablo."

"But we haven’t won yet," Amanda stated.

"But we will," Angela stated firmly. "One way or another we will defeat El Diablo!"

After examining the staff a little more and asking a few more questions, with Angela providing the answers, the two girls lay down for a night of rest. A few minutes after they had lain down, Judah, who had been out scouting around, walked over and lay down beside Amanda.

"Angela," Amanda’s mind was still going and questions were arising. "Shouldn’t one of us stand guard while the other sleeps?"

"Judah will guard us. He’ll let us know if something comes around."

After thinking about that, Amanda had another question. "How would someone defend against Judah or another lion his size, I mean, with only a staff?"

"We couldn’t," her voice was serious, "Judah’s too big."

"Then what if El Diablo catches up with us? How would we stop him?"

There was a long pause before Angela replied, "I don’t know Amanda. Jesus told me you would know the answer to that problem."

Amanda lay quiet now. She did not want to say what she was thinking. She didn’t doubt Jesus or what He said, but as of right now, she didn’t have a clue as to how to defeat El Diablo.

She rolled over next to Judah, and putting her arm on his neck, whispered, "If we do meet up with him I hope you’ll be there."

Closing her eyes, she finally drifted off to sleep. She sure did need this night of rest, because the training had already taken a lot out of her. But she was soon to find out how much she was going to need that training. Because in the early hours of the morning, just as the sun began to rise, Amanda jolted awake and jumped to her feet, staff in hand. At the same instant, Angela was beside her with her staff, as Judah charged towards the woods. There, emerging from the woods, were the shadowy forms of four large adult lions. Diablo’s pack had found them.
