What Is Teen Challenge?

The ministry of Teen Challenge is varied and diverse. The services rendered are determined by human need in the city, region, or area served and the purpose of the individual center. The overall purpose of Teen Challenge is in its mission statement:

“The mission of Teen Challenge is to evangelize people who have life-controlling problems and initiate the discipleship process to the point where the student can function as a Christian in society applying spiritually motivated Biblical principles to relationships in the family, local church, chosen vocation, and the community. Teen Challenge endeavors to help people become mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well, and spiritually alive.”

Each Teen Challenge center has a vital part in achieving this objective.

Teen Challenge Has Five Phases:

graphic Phase I

Basic confrontation evangelism. The purpose and method is to conduct evangelism outreach directly to the people, i.e., street meetings, jail and prison services, helpline substance abuse prevention programs, drop-in counseling, literature distribution, etc.

graphic Phase II

Crisis intervention, pre-induction and referral. Persons with life-controlling problems are provided a place to stay long enough to meet the immediate crisis, to receive a clear witness of the gospel, and to evaluate whether they need or desire the long-term discipleship training offered by Teen Challenge.

graphic Phase III

Induction. This is the beginning of the discipleship process which involves 3-4 months of Bible study and character development.

graphic Phase IV

Training center. Long-term residential program, 8-12 months involving Christian growth and development, academic, and vocational improvement.

graphic Phase V

Reentry. This process is commonly initiated by the induction centers and frequently provides one or more of the following: temporary housing, personal and family counseling, assistance in finding suitable employment and a vibrant church fellowship.
