Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I heard someone say that the devil believes in God. Then why does the devil try to lead God's people in the wrong direction?

Answer: Yes, the devil believes in God. "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble" (James 2:19)(KJV). However, this is not the kind of belief that leads to salvation. This is a mental assent, not a trust that comes from the heart. He [devil] was in heaven at one time as an angel (Ezekiel 28), but was cast out because of his rebellion. "And he [Jesus] said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven" (Luke 10:18). This is WHY he believes in God; he used to live with Him! Another reason, too, is that God sent him to hell (Matthew 25:41).

The devil tries to lead people away from God because he HATES God and God's creation, which includes humans, His crowning of creation. Jesus said about the devil "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10) (KJV).

Please take heed. As Jesus has the plan for you to be saved and go to heaven, the devil has a plan for the destruction of every soul, including you. This should behoove you and all to trust and believe upon the Lord Jesus, knowing that He will grant us eternal life.

God bless you as you serve Him.
