~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: In the Ten Commandments it says "thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything that is in Heaven above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water underneath earth." Does that mean that we cannot have any pictures, statutes, or idols? Does it mean that we cannot have pictures of people that have passed away?

Answer: Thank you for your question about the commandment God gave to us about not making idols, graven images, etc. I believe that if you will check out the Bible in Exodus 20:4-5 you will find that God is definitely telling us not to make any idol, image, picture, etc. to worship. I invite you to look at it again. Also check Exodus 34:12-17.

In the details on how to make the mercy seat that was to be in the tabernacle, God instructed Moses that there were to made two cherubim (angels). These would be a likeness of certain angels. (See Exodus 25:17-22.)

Also, in the building of the Temple under Solomon's reign, the instructions were to make the likeness of angels. (See 2 Chronicles 3:10-13.) It would also be interesting to look at 2 Chronicles 4:1-4 where God commands to make the likeness of oxen.

The Lord is not going against His own word. He was telling us all not to worship images, idols or likenesses.

Your question was a good one and we all should be very careful of our lifestyles.
