Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: When giving communion do you have to bless the communion bread before you give it to the people to transform it to the body and blood of the Lord?

Answer: I believe that communion and its purpose have been distorted in many Christian churches and denominations.

Communion is clearly a memorial of what Christ has done for us as Christian believers. To claim that it has some kind of meritorious powers is very wrong. The real shed blood of Christ saves us, not a piece of bread or cup of grape juice. Please read 1 Corinthians 11:17-34.

We do not have to bless the elements (bread and wine) to gain a special presence of Christ. Christ already declared that where two or three are gathered together in His Name, He would be in their midst (Matthew 18:20). He does not come only when communion is served.

Adam Clarke, the Methodist commentator, had the following to say about this matter: "As in the Passover they showed forth the bondage they had been in, and the redemption they had received from it; so in the Eucharist (communion) they showed forth the sacrificial death of Christ, and the redemption from sin derived from it."

I hope this helps.

God bless you as you serve Him!
