Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Do we have legal right to cast demons to the pit or abyss? Do we have legal right to instruct angels on our behalf?

Answer: This is a very interesting question. I will first share my thoughts about angels. There is certainly a lot of discussion on the subject, and I might add, perhaps even an over emphasis on them. They certainly have a great function. However, I find nothing in Scripture to indicate that we have any authority to dispatch them, command them, or to direct them in anyway.

The Bible does tell us the Lord will "Give His angels charge over thee" (Psalm 91:11). Angels are ministering spirits (Hebrews 1:14). Angels were involved in deliverance and in protection of God's people as we see in Exodus 14:19, Daniel 6:22, Acts 12:7 and Acts 27:23. Now it may be appropriate to ask God to dispatch angels, but I see nowhere that we have such authority.

The second part of your question deals with our legal right to cast demons into the pit or the abyss. Jesus, in dealing with the demoniac of Gadara, had the demons begging him to cast them into the swine, which Jesus did. He could have commanded them to go wherever He chose. In Luke 10:17 when the seventy had returned they were rejoicing because, "even the devils are subject unto us through thy name." Jesus told them in verse 19, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Our Lord certainly has given the church authority over demon forces. With that authority, the one exercising it, would have control to command the demon force wherever he should go. I would like to share this thought with you. Any power or authority we have in dealing with the spiritual world is that which God has given. Mark 16:17 tells us that we "shall cast out devils."

You might recall the account of the seven sons of Sceva who attempted to cast out devils in their own power and might (Act 19:14-16). The demon attacked the men. We need Holy Ghost power to do the works of Christ.
