Question: Does God really forget?

People often say that God has forgiven them and so He has 'forgotten' their sins. It is just as though it never happened - their slate has been wiped clean. If they mentioned it to God, he wouldn't know what they were talking about because He has 'forgotten'.

I believe that God does forgive us, totally, if we truly repent of our sins. And the Word does say that He forgives us as far as the east is from the west. I know we are cleansed by the blood of Jesus. But I cannot find in the Word where it says that He 'forgets'.

I know He 'ceases to remember' but to me this is different to forgetting. We can choose to cease to remember hurts when we forgive people but it doesnt mean we have forgotten the issue just that we have forgiven the person for the pain they may have caused us.

To me to say God has forgotten, is to say that he is forgetful.

Would like your thoughts on this matter.

Answer: Whether God actually forgets anything or not, the effect is the same: God remembers our sins no more. It is difficult to think of our infinite God actually forgetting anything, since He is omniscient. When God says that He remembers something against us no more (Isaiah 43:25), He is not referring to actual memory but to the fact that He regards a person as if he has not sinned.
