Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I have a few questions for you. I am a Christian but when I was talking to a non-Christian he asked me a few questions and I was speechless. I also watched a movie that got me thinking. If God loves us so much, why would he let us go to hell??

Answer: God is love, but God is not only love. God's basic characteristic is holiness (1 Pet. 1:14) He is separate from moral evil and sin. Heaven is holy because it is the residence of God. If unrepentant sinful men were to inhabit heaven, could it be heaven? If a holy place is corrupted by sin, that would not be heaven. In fact that is what happened to earth.

Would it be love to put a child with a pedophile? God's holiness also demands justice. Sin is a transgression and must be punished. If unrepentant men went to heaven would that be just?

But God's judgment comes as a last resort. He is patient to give opportunity for repentance and to avert judgment. God does not send us to hell. We go to hell over his "dead body" - that is rejecting the substitutionary sacrifice and payment for our sin in the death of Christ.

If you want insight into God's thinking on sin and salvation read prayerfully and carefully the New Testament book of Romans.
