Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: What does the Bible say about domestic violence, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse?

Answer:

The Bible has much to say about how we are to treat one another. Jesus said the key is to love one another (John 13:34).

When one abuses someone else, whether it be sexual, verbal, or physical, it is not of God. It is sinning against the other person. The one who is inflicting the abuse needs help. It begins with repenting and receiving Christ as Savior! Even after all that, it is very likely that the person will need further counseling from a Spirit filled minister. This will assure accountability.

The one(s) victimized need to be protected at all cost. If it means being removed from that situation, whether temporarily or permanently (depending upon the decisions of the abuser), they need to be in a safe environment. The victims need the Lord as well, to help them with obtaining a forgiving spirit. Though it will not be easy, it is possible.

The goal is to see both sides of the situation receive deliverance through Jesus Christ. The one victimizing others, obviously need to be delivered from a spirit that has been controlling him. The answer, in my opinion, is not through modern counseling methods, but through the power of the gospel and Spirit filled ministry. This means that he will have to seek out a good minister and church which will be able to help in these situations.

May God give you liberty through His Son Jesus Christ! (John 8:32-36)
