~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Is it all right for Christians to put curses on others, saved or unsaved? Please explain Psalm 128, 66, 119, 109, 91 and the book of James. I need to know if my interpretation is right.

Answer: No, it is neither right nor Christian to put curses on people. In fact, we don't have the power to curse, only God does! (Read Deuteronomy 28 and John 15:5 b.) The verse in James you must be referring to is James 3:9. This verse is dealing with using curse words or critical words about someone, not cursing their lives with some kind of hex.

Jesus tells us to love all people, even our enemies! Read Matthew 5:44.

It seems to be that under the dispensation of the Law [which is the time of David in the Psalms that you are referring to], God was preserving a nation from ungodly influences of surrounding pagan nations, so God permitted the slaying of these unrighteous people. [Read First and Second Samuel and Joshua]. David would pray that God would be his and the Nation of Israel's defense and ask God to curse such people.

Now, under the dispensation of grace, the Lord has called upon us to follow His example by forgiving and loving all mankind (Matthew 18:21-35). Notice how Stephen, when being martyred by his opposers, asked God not to lay anything to their charge (Acts 7:60).

This is all possible by God's Spirit within the human heart (Galatians 5:22).
