Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Is it wrong for males to wear earrings? I don't see anything to prove it wrong in the Bible.

Answer:  Since you are a lady, I am presuming that you are closely associated with a "male" who is wearing, or wants to wear, earrings. The fact that you ask the question indicates that there is some measure of doubt about this issue. If you don't mind, may I direct my answer to this person(s) rather than to you?

First of all, there are two Scripture passages that I know of that refer to this matter. Leviticus 19:28 says, "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you." The 19th chapter begins a list of things that the people of God are to practice; the reason, "Ye shall be holy, for I am holy." (Leviticus 19:2)

The second passage is directed to the leaders, who are the priests. "But he shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself. They shall not make baldness upon their heads, neither shall they shave off the corners of their beards, nor make any cuttings in their flesh" (Leviticus 21:4-5)

You may answer that these are from the Old Testament, and are not binding on us today. Nevertheless, remember that the entire Bible is The Word of God.

There is one law that encompasses both the Old and the New Testaments; Luke 10:27 and 28, is a quotation from Leviticus 19:18. See also Romans 13:8-10. We are to be governed by the law of love, first toward God, and then to our fellow human beings.

Now, let me ask you a question, have you been born again? If the answer is yes, the Holy Spirit of God dwells within you. Who is now your Lord; Jesus or "self"? 2 Corinthians 5:15 says that we should not henceforth live unto ourselves, but unto Him that died for us, and rose again.

Now, let me ask, why do you want to wear earrings (implying that in order to do so, you must pierce your ears)? Are you dissatisfied with the way God made you, without any holes in your ears? Or is it because you want to be like certain people who follow this practice? Or is it because you want to attract attention to yourself?

Now for the sake of argument, you say that since you are free in Christ, you are at liberty to do this. Do you find that the males who wear earrings are the most consecrated Christians you know? I do not think that they are. Do you love God with all your heart? If you do, you would want to please Him in every way. Do you love your neighbor as yourself? If so, you would not want the weaker brother to stumble over you, but rather to follow your example. "Brethren, ye are called unto liberty: only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another" (Galatians 5:13). If we love our neighbor as ourselves, we would refrain from doing anything that would cause someone to stumble. You alone must make that decision.

I hope that these thoughts will be helpful.
