Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: What authority does Paul have over determining the way the church should be run? In his letters to the church he states his opinions. Does Jesus say anywhere that his directions are correct?

Answer: You asked, "What authority does Paul have over determining the way the church should be run?"

In answer to that question, let me first call to your attention that an overwhelming number of Bible scholars believe that Paul was the greatest of the apostles.

The second thing I would like to point out is that Paul was used by God to reveal His mysteries to the church. Mysteries such as the symbols of water baptism. See Romans 6:3-5; Colossians 2-12, etc.

It was Paul who explained to us the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians, chapters 12-14.

Paul revealed the mystery of the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15-51-58. In fact, most of the mention of the words mystery, and mysteries in the Bible are connected with the Apostle Paul.

I believe that even when Paul was giving his "opinions" he was anointed, possibly more that he himself was aware of. Also, his "opinions" were left in the Word of God (See 2 Timothy 3:16,17).

Concerning your second question, "Does Jesus say that any of his (Paul's) directions are correct?"

I know of nowhere that Jesus says that any of the writers of the New Testament are correct. I sincerely doubt that God would allow incorrect writings to stay in His Word.

And now I have a kindly question for you. Why are you troubled about the writings of Paul, but you mention no one else? I am sincerely interested.

If it is because you do not care for some of the things Paul teaches, it might be good for you to check your attitude toward Bible doctrine. However, if your answer is that you wonder about the places where Paul states that his directions are his opinions, such as 1 Corinthians 7:6,12,25, and others, I can certainly understand your questions, and confess that I also have wondered the same thing from time to time.

However, I do find myself contented to just obey and leave the questionable things with God.
