Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Why do Christians have to go to church so much? I know God said one day a week, so that would be Saturday or Sunday, whichever they happen to believe in. But why do they go at night on other days, and why do they have special services, like Bible study and prayer meeting, and all that other stuff? Don't they do that on their regular church day? I have friends that go to church all the time and it doesn't make sense to me.

Answer: Since Christian living receives its guidance and strength from things recorded in the Bible, I will have to use the Bible to explain "why" Christians "go to church so much." I would refer you to a passage in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 7 and verses 36 to 50. Here you find a woman whose behavior was judged irrational by the Pharisee, but declared to be perfectly acceptable to Jesus Christ. The woman had been delivered from a life of sin through Jesus' mercy, and she could not help but express her gratitude in the way she did. Having been forgiven much, she also loved much, and when we truly love someone, we want to spend a lot of time in that person's presence.

In like manner, true Christians have been set free from sin's guilt and power, and naturally love to spend their time in the presence of their deliverer. Jesus said, that where two or three have gathered together in His name, He is in their midst.

From your question, I surmise that you are a person who has never experienced the "New Birth", or have had a personal spiritual encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. If you had, you would not consider the practice of Christians meeting together often, to worship Him who loved them and gave them eternal life, as being irrational. You are what the Bible refers to as the "Natural Man". (1 Corinthians 2:14). That is, you have not yet experienced the new birth. When you do, you will understand why we love to get together as much as we can, to worship God in Spirit and Truth. The more we love Him, the more we love to be in His presence.
