Question: How does one follow God's calling in their life and how can one be sure of God calling?

Answer: Let's start with first things first.

How can we be sure of God's calling?

FIRST, we are all called to become followers of Jesus Christ: Matthew 11:28; John 3:16; Ephesians 1:5; 1 John 2:1,2

SECOND, we are all called to work for the Lord in some capacity:

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:8-10).

When we are born again, it is to serve the Lord. We should make it our highest priority to please God.

"Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created" (Revelation 4:11).

It seems obvious that we are all called of God. So then, an individual needs to determine God's calling for their life.

I know of no better way to begin than to stay close to God by reading His word, Fellowshipping with Him in praise and prayer, and observing the needs around us.

"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest" (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

Also, we need to be careful to follow Christ one step at a time. God does not usually let us see very far ahead in our lives. We must follow by faith and trust Him to lead us. This helps to build character in our lives.

Many times God will let some opportunity open, or some "door" be opened to us. This can, and very often will be His leading.

THIRD: How do we follow God's call, or leading?

Sincerely, faithfully, humbly, excitedly, all the while being thankful that He loves us enough to allow us to serve Him. Remember, it is not drudgery to serve God, but rather it is a blessing and honor to know that He considers us worthy.

Because of this, we give it all we've got. Let's get going!

There are many reasons why God shouldn't have called you.

But don't worry.
You're in good company.

Moses stuttered.
David's armor didn't fit.
John Mark was rejected by Paul.
Timothy had ulcers.
Hosea's wife was a prostitute.
Amos' only training was in the school of fig-tree pruning.
Jacob was a liar.
David had an affair.
Solomon was too rich.
Jesus was too poor.
Abraham was too old.
David was too young.
Peter was afraid of death.
Lazarus was dead.
John was self-righteous.
Naomi was a widow.
Paul was a murderer.
So was Moses.
Jonah ran from God.
Miriam was a gossip.
Gideon and Thomas both doubted.
Jeremiah was depressed and suicidal.
Elijah was burned out.
John the Baptist was a loudmouth.
Martha was a worry-wart.
Mary was lazy.
Samson had long hair.
Noah got drunk.
Did I mention that Moses had a short fuse?
So did Peter, Paul--well, lots of folks did.

But God doesn't require a job interview.
He doesn't hire and fire like most bosses,
because He's more our Dad than our Boss.

He doesn't look at financial gain or loss.
He's not prejudiced or partial, not judging, grudging, sassy,
or brassy, not deaf to our cry, not blind to our need.

As much as we try, God's gifts are free.
We could do wonderful things for wonderful people
and still not be...Wonderful.

Satan says, "You're not worthy."
Jesus says, "So what? I AM."

Satan looks back and sees our mistakes.
God looks back and sees the cross.

He doesn't calculate what you did in '98.
It's not even on the record.

Sure.
There are lots of reasons why God shouldn't have called us.
But if we are magically in love with Him,
if we hunger for Him more than our next breath,
He'll use us in spite of who we are, where we've been,
or what we look like.

I pray that as Christians,
we will step out of our limitations
into the unlimitable nature of who God is.
Then our passion for God and our passion to communicate
Him will make mincemeat of our limitations.
