Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: My son brought home a cd with objectionable language and many objectionable words. When we confronted him, he said that he did not think that they were bad and that the Bible didn't preclude the use of such words. I began to search and could not find any thing to help with this. I am very concerned because this cd came from the christian section of the music store and does have some good message but is laced with this language as the singer says to reach the young in their own vernacular. Please help; or am I wrong. Thanks for any assistance that you can offer.

Answer: I cannot understand the use of objectionable words and language used by anyone who claims to be a Christian. This is not pleasing to God.

Your son says that the Bible does not preclude the use of such words. I strongly disagree.

There is a principle involved here. It is never right to do wrong. I remember a few years ago when a false cult was accused of gross deception in obtaining new converts. Their answer was that the deception was permissable because it was a "Heavenly Deception". We don't need to have the IQ of a rocket scientist to see through that masquerade.

There are many passages of scripture that can enlighten us, however, I will just refer to a few.

First, I encourage you to look at Matthew 12:33-37. Also, take a careful look at 2 Corinthians 6:14-18. In what fellowship should we participate to make ourselves acceptable to the sinner? Shall we drink with the drunkard to win him? Should we do drugs to reach the drug addict? Shall we commit immorality to reach the immoral?

Surely, in all of these examples, and many more, we can see the folly of becoming like the sinner to reach the sinner. In fact, when we become like the sinner to reach the sinner, we have not converted him, but he has converted us.

I also urge you to examine Ephesians 5:1-8; 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8, 2 Timothy 3:1-5, and Revelation 22:10-12.

I do sincerely hope this will help in meeting your need.
