Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: My boyfriend is Methodist and he said Methodist are not required to go to church every Sunday. Is that true? I thought you were required to go every Sunday.

Answer: In order to answer your question, I am going to make an assumption that your boyfriend, as you describe as a Methodist, is also one with a personal relationship with Jesus. Believers in Jesus are exhorted in Hebrews 10:25 to regularly meet together with other believers. In the book of Acts and other New Testament books, it is clear that this was at least once a week, if not more. The terminolgy you used, "required to go to church," leads me to think that there is a desire lacking in wanting to be together with Jesus and his followers. Would it seem strange if he said he was not required to go on a date with you once a week? If one is in love, is he "required" to spend a specific minimum time with the one he loves? I have found that those who love Jesus seek opportunities to join together with others who share that interest, and not finding excuses to avoid it.
