Lesson 29 - The Crucifixion of Jesus. (Text Version)

The Indignities heaped on Jesus (Cont'd.)

    19. They crucified him.
    20. They crucified him between two thieves.
    21. The soldiers divided his clothes among them and cast lots for his robe (Matthew 27:35: John 19:23-24).
    22. "They that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, y and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross" (Matthew 27:40).
    23. "Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God" (Matthew 27:41-43).
    24. "The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth" (Matthew 27:44).
    25. "One of them took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink" (Matthew 27:48).
    26. "The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him" (Matthew 27:49).

Six witnesses who affirmed the innocence of Jesus

(1) Judas (Matthew 27:4); (2) Pilate's wife (vs. 19); (3) Pilate (vs. 24); (4) Herod (Luke 23:15); (5) malefactor crucified with Jesus (Luke 23:41); (6) centurion, (Luke 23:47).

The superscription on the cross.

"And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS" (Luke 23:38).

Seven sayings from the cross.

  1. "My God, my God, Why hast thou forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34; Psalm 22:1).
  2. "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34).
  3. "Verily, I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43).
  4. "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit" (Luke 23:46).
  5. "Woman, behold thy son...behold thy mother" (John 19:26-27).
  6. "I thirst" (John 19:28).
  7. "It is finished" (John 19:30).

Two great testimonies from the enemies of Jesus:

  1. He saved others (Matt. 27:42; Acts 10:38).
  2. He trusted in God (Matt. 27:43; Psalm 22:8).

Two dying criminals contrasted (Dr. Finis Dake)

  1. One mocked Christ, demonstrating utter lack of reason (Luke 23:39).
  2. One demonstrated the highest type of intelligence in 8 ways (vs. 40-43)

    1. Feared God (vs. 40).
    2. Rebuked another for not fearing God (vs.40).
    3. Acknowledged his own condemnation and helpless state (vs. 40).
    4. Acknowledged justice for crimes he committed (vs. 41).
    5. Confessed faith in the innocence of Christ who had been cleared by all civil rulers of any wrongdoing and who was being crucified solely because of religious jealousy and malice, as could be seen by all men (vs. 41).
    6. Confessed Jesus as Lord (vs. 42).
    7. Confessed faith in the eventual triumph of Christ's kingdom (vs. 42).
    8. Asked mercy and forgiveness of Jesus Christ (vs. 42).

Order of events leading up to and the day of the crucifixion. See Dake New Testament, page 33.
