Lesson 33 - What About Holiness? Part 2(Text Version)

Are there rules of dos and don'ts that we should be concerned about or should we talk against the people who have rules and dos and don'ts and even call them "legalists"? (Cont'd.)

  • Then, how about the ones in Romans 12-14; Ephesians 5-6; 11 Tim. 3:1-7; and Hebrews 12, to mention a few?

  • The commandments of God (the do's and the don't's) are all through both the Old and New Testaments. 1 John 2:4 says, "He that says I know him and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."

What special problems do preachers and other people have who neglect the "dos and the don'ts"?

One of their main problems will be with the Lord who gave the book and the commandments; they must give account to Him.

The other problem is with the people who do not know right from wrong and might point an accusing finger at the preacher and say, "You never told me so."

Still another is the confusion and disgrace to the name of the Holy One.

Are there "dos and don'ts" in the Bible that have something to do with clothes? Pleasures? Speech? Music? Entertainment?

Romans 1:32 says, "Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." Taking pleasure in the things that insult the purity and holiness of God shows that our love is of the world and that we are the enemies of God. See James 4:4 and 1 John 2:15-17. Can we laugh at dirty jokes that sinners tell? Can we watch and take pleasure in immoral scenes in movies and on television?

Is it only in the matter of Christian living that we do not want rules?

  1. Who would want there to be no rules for driving a motor vehicle or who would want to ride in an airplane if there were not strict rules?
  2. Would we wish that there were no strict rules for the chemist or the pharmacist to follow in making medicines or in labelling poisons or foods?
  3. How could games of sports be played with no rules to go by?
  4. How long would an expensive automobile or other delicate machine last if we ignore the rules for maintenance and operation?
  5. What kind of marriage would two people have if there were no rules that both respected and each would do as he or she pleased at any moment?

Are people not hypocritical who feel that it is only with Christian living that there should be no rules?

God who created the universe is a God of design and order and he says to us: "Let all things be done decently and in order" (1 Corinthians 14:40).

Do LITTLE things matter with God?

Yes! Jesus said that "Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment" (Matthew 12:36).

Yes! 2 Corinthians 5:10 tells us that God will judge every deed, good or evil.

Is the neglect of or opposition against holiness teaching due to ignorance or is it because of re"ellion against God's ways as given in His book, the Holy Bible?

"Please tell me more."
