Lesson 9 - What About Prayer? Part II. Cont'd.(Text Version)

Does God Hear Sinners' Prayers? (Cont'd.)

It seems that sometimes, although the person doing the praying is not a godly person, that God in his mercy and goodness hears and answers a sinner's prayer. God's goodness should lead a person to repentance (Romans 2:4).
God said in Jeremiah 29:12,13, "You shall call upon me, and you shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And you shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart."
Speaking of lost people, Romans 10:13 says, "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

How To Establish A Prayer Relationship With God:

  1. Get right with God completely. "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. Speak not evil one of another..." (James 4:8-11).
  2. Establish a time - first thing in the morning, last thing at night. Let God be the first to whom you speak in the morning and the last before sleeping. Commune with God during the day. This should be in addition to returning thanks to God before eating your meals.

God's Promises In Answering Prayer:

  1. 1 John 5:14-15: "This is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he hears us; And if we know that he hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him."
  2. Jesus said to his disciples, in John 14:13 -14, "Whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it If you love me, keep my commandments."
  3. John 15:7: "If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you."
  4. John 15:16: "You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you."
  5. John 16:24: "Hitherto have you asked nothing in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full."
  6. 1 John 3:21-22: "Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight."
  7. Jesus said, (Matthew 7:7-11) "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask of you, a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"

Where Should We Pray?

When we were on a tour in the Holy Land, our Jewish guide said that people could pray at the temple but not in the synagogues. This seemed strange to me and I am not sure that it was true. I do not read in the Scriptures that people are forbidden to pray at any location on earth. Aren't you glad we do not have to be in a particular place for God to hear us?

  1. However, there are special places that we should pray. In Mark 11:17, Jesus cited from Isaiah 56:7, "My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer." ("My house shall be called an house of prayer for all people" (Isaiah 56:7). In Acts 3:1, we read, "Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour." See Acts 22:17. Paul in Jerusalem, said when I "prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; And saw...."
