Lesson 13 - What About Death? Part II (Cont'd.) (Text Version)

"There are 7 Hebrew and Greek words translated hell and grave as follows: (Cont'd.)

  1. (Cont'd.)
"Sheol is translated hell 31 times.
Sheol is translated grave 31 times.
Sheol is translated pit 3 times."
[The particular references can be seen in Dake's Annotated Bible, page 620 or in Strong's Concordance.]

  2. "Hebrew qebar, the proper word or grave, the seen world, is translated 6 different ways and always of the place where the body goes at death." It is translated: "(1) Grave, (2) Graves, (3) Burial, (4) Burying place, (5) Sepulchre, (6) Sepulchres." [The particular scriptures translated the various ways are on the same page in Dake's Bible or can be found in Strong's Complete Concordance.]
  3. Greek hades, the unseen world. It is equivalent to sheol of the O.T. and is always in contrast with mnaymion, the seen world, or place of bodies at death, mnaymion meaning the grave is never translated hell. Hades is translated hell 10 times. Hades is translated grave 1 time (I Corinthians 15:55).
  4. Greek mnaymion, the proper word for grave is translated 5 different ways as follows: (1) Grave, (2) Graves, (3) Tomb, (4) Tombs, (5) Sepulchre, (6) Sepulchres.
  5. Greek gehenna, from Hebrew, gay, gorge or valley, and Hinnom, a Jebusite name. It means valley of Hinnom, where perpetual fires were kept to burn the refuse of Jerusalem. It came to be used by the Jews as an appropriate picture of eternal hell and eternal punishment. Gehenna is translated hell 12 times. It is never translated grave and this is correct.
  6. Greek tartaroo, Latin tartarus the deep abyss of sheol-hades, the unseen world.
  7. Greek limnen tou puros, lake of fire, the same as gehenna of fire, the eternal hell, and perdition of all spirit, giant, pre-Adamite, and Adamite rebels against God. It is used 5 times" [all in Revelation].

"It can be seen from a study of all the above scriptures on sheol-hades, gehenna, tartarus, and qeber-mnaymion that hell is not the grave, but a place of consciousness and torment. This will be abundantly proved in the following facts about hell and the grave.

"88 Facts Proving Hell Not the Grave

  • 1. In Scripture, sheol-hades (hell) is never the place of the body although translated grave 31 times, qeber-mnaymion (grave) never the place of the soul (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:25-29).
  • 2. Sheol never in the plural: qeber in plural 38 times, singular 74 times.
  • 3. Sheol never located on earth; qeber located on earth 73 times.
  • 4. Body never goes to sheol; body mentioned as going to qeber 75 times.
  • 5. Individual's sheol never mentioned; individual qebers mentioned 79 times.
  • 6. Man never puts anyone into sheol; man puts bodies into qebers 40 times.
  • 7. Man never digs or makes a sheol; man digs and makes qebers 51 times.
  • 8. Man on earth never touches a sheol; he touches qebers 51 times.
  • 9. Man has never seen a sheol on earth; he has seen qebers 51 times.
  • 10. God alone puts men into sheol (Numbers 16:30-33; 1 Samuel 2:6; Ezekiel 31:16; Luke 16:19-31).
  • 11. God alone will bring men out of sheol (1 Samuel 2:6; Revelation 20:11-15).
  • 12. Hell-bound men descend (Isaiah 5:14) and go down (into the lower parts of the earth) into sheol at death (Genesis 37:3 5; 42:3 8; 44:29-31; Numbers 16:30-33; [and others].
  • 13. Men go into sheol in a moment and quickly (Numbers 16:30-33; Job 21:13; Psalm 55:15; Luke 16:19-31).
  • 14. Men are forced into sheol (Isaiah 5:15).
  • 15. Men are cast into sheol (Ezekiel 31:15-17).
  • 16. Sheol is located in the nether parts of the earth (Ezekiel 31:14-18; 32:24), lower parts of the earth (Psalm 63:9; 68:18; Ephesians 4:4-10) below the foundations of the mountains (Jonah 2:2-6, beneath like a pit (Proverbs 15:24; Isaiah 14:9-16; Ezekiel 31:14-18; 32:18-31), and is too deep to dig into (Job 11:8; Amos 9:2).
  • 17. Sheol-hades, unlike the grave, is a place of activity, a place of wrath (Deuteronomy 32:22; Luke 16:19-31).
  • 18. A place of sorrow (Genesis 42:38, 44:29, 31; 2 Samuel 22:6; Psalm 18:5; 55:15; 116:3; Proverbs 7:27; Isaiah 14:9-15).
