Lesson 19 - The Birth of Jesus (Text Version)

What Did They Do and Say? (Cont'd.)

3. Zecharias, a priest and the father of John the Baptist
(Luke 1:63-79).

a. He blessed the Lord God of Israel for what He had done and will yet do:

  • He visited and redeemed His people.
  • He raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, as he spake by his prophets since the world began.
  • We shall be saved from our enemies, and from those who hate us.
  • He performed the mercy promised to our fathers.
  • He remembers his holy covenant and His oath to Abraham.
  • He will deliver us out of the hands of our enemies that we might serve him without fear, in righteousness and holiness, all the days of our life.

b. He prophesied concerning His son, John:

  • You will be called the prophet of the Highest.
  • You will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways. [Does he speak the next part regarding John or Jesus?]
  • Will give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high has visited
  • Will give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

4. Simeon. He was just and devout, waiting for the coming of Messiah. It was revealed to him that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

  • He came by the Spirit into the temple when the parents brought the child Jesus, being 8 days old.
  • He took the child up in his arms and said, "Now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word."
  • He said, "My eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all people."
  • He prophesied concerning Jesus that He would:

      a. Be a light to lighten the Gentiles.
      b. Be the glory of God's people, Israel.
      c. Was set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel.
      d. Would be a sign which shall be spoken against.

    He blessed Mary and Joseph.
He prophesied that a sword would pierce through Mary's soul.

5. Anna, an aged widow who stayed at the temple and served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

  • She coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord.
  • She spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem
