Lesson 28 - Bible Instructions for Husbands and Wives. (Text Version)

God's Instructions To Wives. Some Dos And Don'ts.

  1. The wife will have sorrow in conception and in childbearing (Genesis 3:16).
  2. "Thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee" (Genesis 3:16).
  3. "A virtuous woman (wife is inferred) is a crown to her husband. but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones" (Proverbs 12:4).
  4. "Every wise woman (wife) buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands" (Proverbs 14:1).
  5. "The virtuous woman" (wife, who has many virtues) is described in Proverbs 31.
  6. "Whosoever shall many her (a wife) that is divorced committeth adultery" (Matthew 5:32). It takes two to commit adultery (also Matthew 19:9).
  7. "The woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth, but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man" (Romans 7:2-3).
  8. "To avoid fornication...let every woman have her own husband" (1 Corinthians 7:2).
  9. The wife is to satisfy the lawful sex needs of her husband (1 Corinthians 7:3). The wife is not to defraud (deprive) her husband except it be by consent for a time, that they may give themselves to fasting and prayer, that Satan tempt not because of incontinency (1 Corinthians 7:5).
  10. The wife does not have power (authority) of her own body, but the husband (1 Corinthians 7:4).
  11. "Let not the wife depart from her husband" (1 Corinthians 7:10).
  12. "But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband" (1 Corinthians 7:11). "The wife is bound by the law (of God) as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 7:39).
  13. "The woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him" (1 Corinthians 7:13). "For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband?" (1 Corinthians 7:16).
  14. "She that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband" (1 Corinthians 7:34).
  15. "The head of the woman is the man" (1 Corinthians 11:3). "The man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman but all things of God" (1 Corinthians 11:8-12).
  16. "Every woman (wife) that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered (without a covering or long hair) dishonoreth her head (her husband)" (1 Corinthians 11:5).
  17. "Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord" (Ephesians 5:22). "Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord" (Colossians 3:18). "Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation (manner of living) of the wives, while they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands" (1 Peter 3:1-5).
  18. "Let...the wife see that she reverence her husband" (Ephesians 5:33).
  19. All wives should be "grave (venerable, honorable, honest) not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things" (1 Timothy 3:11). A man is disqualified to serve as a pastor or deacon if his wife is not like this.
  20. "Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth. And these things give in charge that they may be blameless" (1 Timothy 5:5-6).
  21. "I will therefore that the younger women (widows) marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully" (1 Timothy 5:14).

There might be some other instructions which we have not included. Therefore every husband and wife should diligently read the Scriptures to know God's perfect will.
