Lesson 25 - The Life and Ministry of Jesus - Part V (Cont'd.)(Text Version)

What Did He Teach? (Cont'd.)

    14. He taught that "He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross and followeth after me is not worthy of me" (Matthew 10: 37-38). "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:26-27).

    15. He taught who the truly blessed people are and why (Matthew 5:1-11). The poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and those who are persecuted for righteousness sake.

    16. He taught the necessity of keeping the commandments and of being more righteous than the religious leaders of his day (Matthew 5:19-20).

    17. He taught that being angry with your brother without a cause would put a person in danger at the judgment and to call a person a fool would make one in danger of hell fire (Matthew 5:22).

    18. He taught that a person should make things right with his brother before offering his gift to God (Matthew 5:23-25).

    19. He taught that "Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart," and that the commandment forbids adultery (Matthew 5:27-28).

    20. He taught, " Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery" (Matthew 5:32).

    21. He taught, "Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, Yea, Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil" (Matthew 5:33-37).

    22. He taught that we give in to or do not resist evil when we get revenge (Matthew 5:38).

    23. He taught that if we are forced to give or go to benefit our adversary, 'go the extra mile' and do more than required (Matthew 5:40-41).

    24. He said we should be willing to give or lend to others (Matthew 5:42).

    25. He taught that we should treat our enemies the opposite of what most people do, that is, "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hat you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you" (Matthew 5:43-48).

    26. He taught that if we pray, fast, or give alms, to be seen of others, we have our reward already, but that if we do it secretly "to thy Father ... thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly" (Matthew 6:1-6). "When ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward" (Matthew 6:16).

    27. He taught, " When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them..." (Matthew 6:7-8).

    28. He taught how to pray in what is commonly called "The Lord's Prayer" (Matthew 6:9-13).

    29. He taught, "If ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. " but that "If ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you" (Matthew 6:14-15).

    30. He taught that treasures should be laid up in heaven, not on earth, because " "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also," (Matt. 6:19-21) and because earthly treasures can be stolen or become corrupted.

    31. He taught, "No man can serve two masters ... Ye cannot serve God and mammon" (Matthew 6:24).

    32. He taught that we should not allow ourselves to become over anxious or worry about earthly necessities of food and clothing but "Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matthew 6:25-34).

    33. He taught that we will be judged by the same standards that we set for others (Matthew 7:1-2).

    34. He taught that we should get the big faults out of our own lives before we can help others get rid of their little faults (Matthew 7:2-5).
